The covered entity (CE), University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, reported that its business associate (BA) was the victim of a ransomware attack affecting the protected health information (PHI) of 1,533 individuals. The PHI involved included names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. The CE notified HHS, affected individuals, the media, and posted substitute notice on its website. In response to the breach, the CE strengthened its technical safeguards and provided complimentary credit monitoring services to affected individuals.
