Hostile actors accessed UK electoral register copies and commission email systems
The UK Electoral Commission disclosed that attackers had access to its systems from August 2021 until the intrusion was found in October 2022, exposing copies of electoral registers with names and addresses of people registered from 2014 to 2022 (about 40 million per annual register) and its email system. The UK government later attributed the attack to China-linked actors and imposed sanctions in March 2024.
