Surgical Dermatology Group, the covered entity (CE), reported that its business associate (BA) was the victim of a ransomware attack that affected the electronic protected health information (ePHI) of 13,308 patients. The ePHI involved included names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, clinical information, and health insurance information. The CE notified HHS, affected individuals, and the media. In response to the breach, the CE terminated its business associate relationship with the BA and implemented additional administrative, technical, and security safeguards to better protect its ePHI. OCR obtained assurances that the CE implemented the corrective actions noted.
