The covered entity (CE), Piedmont Healthcare, reported that its business associate (BA) was the subject of a ransomware attack that affected the protected health information (PHI) of 895 individuals. The PHI involved included names, addresses, Social Security and drivers’ license numbers, dates of birth, diagnoses, medications, and other treatment information. The CE notified HHS, affected individuals, the media, and posted substitute notice on its website. In response to the breach, the BA implemented additional administrative, technical, and security safeguards to better protect PHI.
