Criminals abuse IRS Get Transcript tool to pull prior-year tax returns
Criminals used Social Security numbers, birth dates and addresses obtained elsewhere to pass the IRS Get Transcript application's identity checks and download taxpayers' transcripts. The IRS first put the number at about 100,000 accounts, then raised it, reporting more than 700,000 in February 2016.
