Hacked Dutch certificate authority issued at least 531 fraudulent certificates
Attackers compromised DigiNotar in June 2011 and issued at least 531 fraudulent certificates, some used for man-in-the-middle attacks on Iranian Gmail users. Browsers removed its roots around August 29, 2011, the Dutch government took over its operations on September 3, and the firm went bankrupt that month.
