The covered entity (CE), The Cancer Center of Greenwood Leflore Hospital, reported that its business associate (BA) experienced a ransomware attack that affected the electronic protected health information (ePHI) of 2,714 individuals. The ePHI involved included names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, claims information, diagnoses, and lab results. The CE notified HHS, affected individuals, the media, and posted substitute notice on its website. In response to the breach, the BA implemented additional technical safeguards to better protect ePHI. OCR provided the CE with technical assistance regarding the HIPAA Breach Notification Rule.
